"Emmitt"
|
Tom and June's life has changed a lot since they got Emmitt as a 10 week old puppy. June enrolled him in the JAVIC puppy class, and we started learning how difficult obedience training a terrier can be. Terriers sniff, look at everything going around them, whine, bark, and in general do not “sit or down” for anything more than 30 seconds. After puppy class, we continued him in normal obedience class for a long, long time. Meanwhile, next to the obedience training area, JAVIC had started an agility training area, and we enrolled Emmitt in that sport, too! Emmitt was a “natural” at agility. Vickie Maloney, after trying to teach Tom a front cross and having little success, asked if she could run Emmitt and show Tom the proper way to execute the command. So she took this young dog, and did a front cross; a rear cross; a blind cross; and several other agility maneuvers, all of which Emmitt followed flawlessly. Vickie was amazed, and said to Tom: “You have a truly gifted dog here; I could take him on an excellent course today and do a clean run; he has the potential to be a MACH dog!” (Little did she know that Emmitt would get his MACH only 5 days after his 4 th birthday!) Emmitt was also a “natural” at Earthdog, getting his Master Earthdog easily. Finally, after many attempts he also got his CD! |

"Lucy"
|
Lucy has significantly changed Tom and June's life also. Emmitt's breeder called and told us she had this “very active nine month old rescue” and would we consider taking her? Well, we took one look at her and fell in love with that skinny, pretty girl! The previous owners had no time for her and did not know what Border Terriers needed or wanted. She came to us as a rough, tough girl on the outside but a real “scared puppy” on the inside, not house –broken, a mental wreck and a very sick pup who knew little beyond life in a crate! It took a lot of “TLC” to get her to be the lovable dog she is now. Obedience class was quite a challenge, due not only to her rescue status but also to being a stubborn terrier. June would not give up, though, and took beginning obedience over and over again until she finally passed. Lucy recently earned her RN title! We also learned that, while Emmitt is a “natural”, Lucy has to work hard for everything she earns in both agility and earthdog.

| Last, the best thing about BT's is that they are very affectionate, cuddly, intelligent dogs who give their humans a tremendous amount of joy. They also can be strong willed, noisy, fierce hunters. Emmitt and Lucy have truly made a difference in our lives! |
